Supabase: database and backend without your own server.

Supabase gives your app everything it needs behind the scenes: database, login, file storage and live updates. You start for free and only pay once the app is actually running.

What is Supabase?

A backend you don't have to build yourself.

Supabase is a platform for the backend of apps and web applications. Underneath sits Postgres (opens in new tab), one of the most widely used databases there is. Supabase is open source, so you can move away or run it yourself at any time.

For you, that means a new app no longer needs its own server before it has its first user. Login, data and files are there from day one, and your team works on what makes the app special.

What can Supabase do?

Four things every app needs.

  • Database

A full Postgres database. Customers, messages, orders: all in one place and queryable with SQL.

Sign-in via email, magic link or Google, without building your own user management. The database itself controls who sees what.

  • Files

Images, PDFs and voice messages go into storage next to the data, with the same permissions.

  • Live updates

When an entry changes, the app sees it instantly. That makes chats and dashboards possible without reloading.

What does Supabase cost?

Supabase bills per project, in US dollars. Most apps start on the Free plan and switch to Pro at launch.

Free: $0. It includes a 500 MB database, 50,000 monthly active users, 1 GB of files and 5 GB of egress. A free project pauses after one week without activity.

Pro: from $25 a month. It includes an 8 GB database, 100,000 active users, 100 GB of files, 250 GB of egress and $10 in compute credits. Extra usage costs more, for example $0.00325 per additional user.

Team: from $599 a month, with SOC 2 and ISO 27001 for companies that need to prove it.

As of November 2026, according to the Supabase pricing page (opens in new tab). The pause on the Free plan is why we always put production apps on Pro.

In practice

WhatsApp and phone in one app, with Supabase behind it.

For a client we built an iOS app where WhatsApp messages and phone calls come together. Twilio delivers messages and calls, a small backend processes them, and Supabase keeps the history for the whole team.

What that looks like for WhatsApp in a team is covered in WhatsApp Business with multiple users.

How the app is built is shown in our solution WhatsApp and calls in one iOS app.

  • One history for chats and calls
  • Rings for several people at once
  • Busy status: no calls, no pushes
  • Everyone sees who responded
FAQ

What you want to know about Supabase.

Supabase starts free with two projects, a 500 MB database and 50,000 monthly active users. Free projects pause after one week without activity. For production you take the Pro plan from $25 a month, with an 8 GB database and 100,000 users. As of November 2026.

Supabase offers a data processing agreement with the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, which applies once you accept the terms. You pick the region when you create a project, for example Frankfurt. The contracting party is Supabase Pte. Ltd. in Singapore. Whether that is enough for your data is a question for your data protection officer. As of November 2026.

Yes. Supabase is open source and also runs on your own servers, for example with Docker. Updates, backups and security are then on you. For most projects the hosted version in Frankfurt is the simpler route. Self-hosting pays off when your data must not leave your own premises.
